Website Mistakes That Cost You Leads

Most websites do not lose leads with one obvious failure. They lose them slowly, through small problems that go unnoticed while good enquiries quietly slip away. Here are the ones we see most often, and how to fix them.

Your phone number and enquiry button are hard to find

When someone lands on your site, they usually want one of two things: to call you, or to send a quick enquiry. If they cannot see how to do either within a couple of seconds, a good number of them leave and try the next tradie on the list.

The fix is simple. Put your phone number in the top corner of every page, and make it a tappable link on mobile so a customer can ring you with one touch. Add a clear enquiry button that stands out from the rest of the page. It should be obvious, not buried under photos or three scrolls down.

Do not make people hunt. If a job is urgent, and for plumbers, electricians and locksmiths it often is, the easiest business to contact usually wins the work.

The site loads slowly, especially on mobile

Most of your visitors are on their phone, often out on site or standing in a driveway with patchy reception. If your homepage takes several seconds to load, many of them give up before they ever see what you offer.

Slow sites usually come down to a few things: huge uncompressed images, cheap or overloaded hosting, or a page stuffed with plugins and effects. Compress your photos before they go up, choose hosting that can actually keep up, and keep the page clean.

A fast site is not about impressing anyone. It just means the customer who was ready to enquire actually sticks around long enough to do it.

It is not clear what you do, or where you do it

A visitor should understand what you offer and the areas you cover within the first few seconds. Yet many trade and service sites open with a vague slogan and never mention the actual work or the towns and suburbs served.

Say it plainly. If you are a Perth electrician who covers the northern suburbs, put that near the top. List your main services in plain words a customer would use, such as switchboard upgrades, hot water repairs or retaining walls, rather than industry jargon.

Being clear about your service area also helps you show up when locals search for someone nearby. That means more of the right enquiries and fewer time wasters from outside your patch.

There is no trust, so people hesitate to enquire

People are cautious about who they let into their home or onto their property. If your site gives them nothing to trust, they hesitate, and a hesitant visitor often does not enquire at all.

Add the things that reassure a real customer. Genuine photos of your own work, a few honest reviews, your licence or trade qualifications where relevant, your ABN, and a real local presence. These small signals do a lot of quiet work.

You do not need a slick brand or a wall of awards. You need to look like a real, reliable local operator who will turn up and do the job properly.

The enquiry form asks for too much, or is broken

A long form full of required fields is a fast way to lose an enquiry. Every extra box is another reason for a busy person to close the tab. Ask for the essentials, usually a name, a contact number and a short message, and let people fill in the rest once you are talking.

Just as important, check that your form actually works and that submissions reach you. Enquiries fail silently more often than people realise, landing nowhere or in a spam folder no one checks. Test it yourself, and make sure the customer sees a clear confirmation once they hit send.

Frequently asked questions

Check it the way a customer would. Open your own site on your phone and time how long it takes to load, try to find your phone number and enquiry button quickly, and send yourself a test enquiry to confirm it arrives. If any of those are slow, hard or broken, you are almost certainly losing enquiries you never hear about.
